What was the phrase I was searching for yesterday? It was USER GENERATED CONTENT. Slap on the front of Media Guardian an article on drives by The Sun and Channel 5 to invite viewers/readers to send in their pictures and movies and whatnot. Channel 5 are offering £100 pounds for short videos or photos that may be used in bulletins. They're calling it 'Your News' while Newsnight picks up/rips off Korean citizen journalist site Oh My Newsto bring us Oh My Newsnight
This being the BBC, there's no pecuniary reward, just a warning not to do anything hazardous. Thinking about Paxman's reaction to the introduction of a weather forecast at the end of the programme, god knows what he's going to think of broadcasting amateur footage. In fact, there's a sly dig at anyone who might think of sending in their two minute documentaries (using YouTube) as the winners will be played out during Newsnight's 'Geek Week' in January. Actually, I take the term 'geek' as a compliment, so there.
I know I go on about moblog (I'm not working for them, honest) but in the last week Greenpeace have been blogging their successful mission to shut down Didcott power station as they occupied (and chained themselves to) the site. There's also great footage of last weekend's Climate Change rally on their moblog. As Alfie says
Greenpeace's use of moblogs to deliver information from within their protests is in my opinion a truly deep and excellent use of mobile blogging technology
As I said in my moblog report for Smoke News, it's not just whether you blog, it's whether you get there first...which I haven't obviously seeing as I'm blogging about things that happened yesterday or further back in time. Ahem.
Had fun editing this piece to music last night - camera work by James Leckie. Some lovely footage of men in nappies as the Westminster Rugby team 'haze' the freshers.
